Sonny Sneed - An American Dream

An American Dream is not a straight biographical drama. Rather, it will be a non-linear exploration of Sonny’s life as an inventor against the backdrop of American history.

The movie will be comprised of two main parts that hand the storyline off back and forth. One, an intimate look into Sonny’s life, from his humble beginnings in the cotton fields of Montezuma, Georgia to present day. And two, a bird’s eye view of the history of Black inventors in the United States of America.

This will be handled similarly to the way The Grapes of Wrath structures its narrative arc, where Steinbeck alternates between chapters that focus on the Joad family’s personal journey to California with colorful, detailed vignettes that communicate the collective experience of people as a whole.

Audience and Distribution

Our anticipated audience is the population of people who are deeply affected by the treatment of minority citizens of the United States, both historically and in our present time. We saw emotions boil over in 2020 after collectively watching the stories of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, and countless others unfold in the news and on social media.

While the recent memory of these events may bring people to the film, we hope to invite the viewer to an intimate look into the life a man who as railed against conventional thought and socioeconomic systems for more that seventy years.

We have watched zeitgeist and rhetoric shape shift through our social media feeds and national conscience with unprecedented speed. The intense feelings of horror and dismay at the stories of today are quickly replaced by what will come tomorrow. Sonny Sneed is the antithesis to this constant tenor. For the past four decades his focus and conviction has been unwavering. It’s refreshing and invigorating to happen upon a story like Sonny’s.

We plan to do a full multi-media platform release of the film. Our goal will be a top-tier film festival in 2022 and from there we’ll do film festivals and a limited theatrical release. We’ll look for an online distribution platform for SVOD and transactional distrubution.

Funding

Moonlight Pictures is looking for investors and/or production partners to make An American Dream a reality. The project calls for 25-30 days of production with a large enough crew to maintain the aesthetic of the film across various locations in the United States.

There will be many instances that speak to the engineering, design, and capability of the dual tip punch and we will enlist an animation/digital effects house to help create the visuals to support these sections. In finishing the film (e.g. sound design, mix, and color grade) we want to hire the best artists possible within the scope of our budget.

Lastly, we want to engage with potential distribution partners and have a sizable presence on the festival circuit to ensure the sale of the film.
